Yossi and Jagger

True story of soldiers in love begins a trio of films

by Anthony Glassman

Cleveland-Queer films from three different continents hit northeast Ohio in the first two weeks of March.

The Cleveland Institute of Art's Cinematheque starts off the month with Yossi and Jagger, the true story of two gay Israeli soldiers who carry on an affair in secret while stationed on the Lebanese border.

Yehuda Levi, one of Israel's biggest heartthrobs and the star of a popular soap opera, plays Jagger to stage actor Ohad Knoller's Yossi.

The film, while originally receiving no support from the Israeli military, has become a favorite among soldiers. Last year the army arranged a private screening for soldiers, including a question and answer session with director Eytan Fox afterwards.

Yossi and Jagger will play on Saturday, March 6 at 7 pm, and the following day at

4:30 pm.

The following weekend sees two more queer films hit the Cinematheque's screens.

First is Jacques Nolot's Porn Theatre, a twisted tale of romance and manipulation set in a heterosexual house of smut populated by a cast of misfits.

There's the cashier who was a hooker but is now using a 50-year-old man to try to pick up the young male projectionist. There are drag queens, transvestites and transsexuals.

And, of course, it's in French, which makes it just that little bit stranger.

Porn Theatre will be shown on Thursday and Friday, March 11 and 12 at 8:50 pm and 9:20 pm respectively.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is Die, Mommie, Die!

Charles Busch, drag queen, playwright and all-around genius, is back with another celluloid adaptation of one of his plays.

A couple years ago, Psycho Beach Party did tremendously well at the Cinematheque, and this film promises to do just as well.

Busch portrays singing sensation Angela Arden, who retired years ago after the death of her twin sister.

While living with her husband and two children, she begins an affair with a famous, much younger actor, an affair that threatens to break the fragile strand of her sanity.

And, of course, it's really funny, a true paean to the women-in-distress films of the 1940s through the '60s.

On Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13, the film will show at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm respectively.

Tickets to shows at the Cinematheque are $8, $5 for members and students. A second film the same day is only $4.

The Cleveland Institute of Arts Cinematheque is located at 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle. For more information, call 216-421-7450 or go to www.cia.edu/cinematheque.
